Case Studies
We are working with communities and organisations to implement the Cornerstone framework across different locations and systemic contexts. We have created an open source toolkit for communities of place and will continue to test and co-develop new use cases. If you would like to co-develop a strategy for a new use case then please get in touch with the CI Team.

Montreal, Canada
In Canada, the project was undertaken in partnership with the David Suzuki Foundation. In this iteration of the work the framework was adapted to the Canadian context and more specifically co-shaped for use by Milton-Parc, a community group in the City of Montreal. An additional aim of the project was to develop open source tools for each stage of the process. As part of this process, we were supported by the Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo to design and stress test the analysis tools.

Scotland
In Scotland the focus was on connecting citizen views to national government policy making. In this project the aim was to scaffold a wide variety of community groups to give feedback to the Scottish Government on national wellbeing outcomes. Dark Matter Labs partnered with Carnegie UK and the University of Northumbria to develop an online playbook for conversational workshops, collate and analyse the data and feed the outputs back to the Government. This work is currently being used in the Scottish Government’s call for evidence as part of their review of the National Outcomes.

Sweden, Västerås
The first Cornerstone Indicator prototype was developed and run in tri-partnership with Samhällskontraktet and the citizens of Västerås, Sweden. The overall goal was to co-design simple, intuitively understandable indicators that encapsulate what thriving means to the people of Skultana. The initiative ran over a period of 9 months in close collaboration with the local civil servants, who were running a parallel project looking at future scenarios for the district. The process resulted in five unique indicators that are now actively being tracked and evaluated in the city. You can read more about the outputs and learnings from this project in this blog series and report.
